Thursday, June 5th (Staff Development Day)
It was very nice to have the kids at home. The workshops were a bit of a waste of time. Hints were dropped about changes that will be made for the next school year. Ms. ATH and I walked to get lunch. We had Popeye's Chicken. The afternoon workshops were basically more of the same. I was hoping to have some time to set my classroom up for tomorrow, but the day's schedule was full. I like my room in order that includes having an assignment for the kids as soon as they come in. I don't trust myself to arrive early in the morning, so I like to have my room set up before I leave the day before.

Since admin filled the schedule for the entire day, my plan to leave at 3PM had to be scrapped. I settled for 3:30PM. I ended up leaving the building at 3:45PM. Since I would not be able to make the 4:08 MN train, I had to wait for the 4:39 MN train. Again, I got off the train one stop early to walk the rest of the way home (about a 25 minute walk). Dinner was leftovers. Again, I was out like a light soon after eating. I woke up about midnight. I wrote a reply email to NJ epal's reply.(something on my mind will just have to be left to my imagination).

Whoa.
You mean it's not just Utah that has useless staff development meetings for teachers?! Amazing.
I feel so comforted to know that those of you in states that aren't constantly vyiing for the bottom of the pay scale (Utah and Missouri) and the LEAST spent per pupil (Utah and Missouri) also have to suffer through some of the junk we get.
In 20 years of teaching, I remember very few worthwhile staff development sessions. One was when the local police station brought in a whole lot of drug samples for us to see (Imagiine teachers handling baggies of cocaine cut with different substances to learn to tell the difference), another was CPR training, and another was an excercise/stress reduction afternoon taught by our dance teacher. That's about it out of 20 years of motivational speakers, specialists, and the like.
I feel for you.

Hello Paperback. No, it is not just Utah that has useless staff developments. It amazes me that with all of the resources available that admin can't come up with something useful. Sometimes, it is almost as if admin waits until the day before before deciding what to do for staff development.
